Queens Borough President Melinda Katz today announced she has extended the deadline for Queens residents to apply to join one of the borough’s 14 community boards, the neighborhood-level advisory bodies that provide a vital link between City government and the people it serves.

The deadline for applying to be a new or returning member of a community board is now Friday, February 7.

“Community boards hold hearings on and issue recommendations regarding land use and zoning matters, the City budget, municipal service delivery and many other issues relating to their communities,” Katz said. “They play a significant role in helping City government address the needs of its residents, so I encourage all civic-minded Queens residents to consider applying for community board membership. Service on a community board is a great way to contribute to the well-being and quality of life of your neighborhood.”

An application for community board membership may be obtained by visiting Borough President Katz’s website at www.queensbp.org. Further information may also be obtained by calling the Borough President’s office at (718) 286-2900.

Applicants approved to serve on a board will serve two-year terms that begin on April 1. Membership on a board is unsalaried.

Each board consists of 50 members and is responsible for representing the interests of a particular geographic area of Queens.
