I am gratified that private sector job growth in Queens continues to remain steady, despite a national recession that has raised the unemployment rate and downsized many companies.
As we continue to meet the current economic challenge, our workforce remains diversified and the combined efforts of government, colleges and business organizations to match opportunities with job growth will help to keep us strong.
The June Economic Snapshot of the Center for an Urban Future stated that the four boroughs other than Manhattan… “have experience a slow but steady increase in their share of jobs, with Queens overtaking Brooklyn for the second largest share in 1978 and maintaining its lead ever since. Queens share of private sector employment in New York City rose from 10.7 percent in 1958 to 15.1 percent in 2008.”
The amount of private sector jobs in 2008 stood at 470,641.
