Queens Borough President Helen Marshall announced Tuesday, January 5th that she has appointed former assemblyman Barry Grodenchik as her new Deputy Borough President.
Grodenchik was named to the post following former Deputy Borough President Karen Koslowitz’ successful election in 2009 to the City Council, where she will represent the 29th District, a seat she held from 1991 to 2001.
In addition to serving as Marshall’s deputy, a position mandated by the City Charter, Grodenchik will serve as Director of Community Boards and be responsible for parks-related and numerous other issues.
In 2003, Grodenchik was elected to represent the 22nd District in the State Assembly, where he served on five committees, including Health; Aging and Social Services.
“Barry is a seasoned public servant with experience at the state and county level,” said Marshall. “He has been involved in the planning and fruition of many projects in Queens and has the experience and knowledge to serve our county well.”
Prior to his election to the Assembly, Grodenchik worked as former Borough President Claire Shulman’s Chief of Administration at Borough Hall from 1991 to 2002. Before his arrival at Borough Hall, Grodenchik was the Queens Regional Representative at the State Department of State and served as ombudsman for Queens County for then Governor Mario Cuomo.
Most recently, Grodenchik was vice present for a government and political relations firm in New York City.
Marshall told members of her Borough Cabinet on Tuesday, “I am delighted to have Barry back at Borough Hall, where he will be working closely with our 14 community boards.
