1/19/2010 FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2010 STATEMENT BY QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT HELEN MARSHALL ON DEATH OF HEROIC LIFEGUARD MEL CUBA
DEATH OF HEROIC LIFEGUARD MEL CUBA

The New York Times today reported the death of a long ago, but not forgotten hero lifeguard who rescued four children in Rockaway in 1933.

On behalf of the people of Queens, I extend condolences to the family of Mel Cuba and gratitude to them for his selfless and heroic act so many years ago.

Mr. Cuba, who was celebrating his 23rd birthday on August 8, 1933, was on duty in Rockaway Beach when more than 100 orphans from the Pride of Judea Home in Brooklyn entered the waters. After a huge wave reportedly swept them away, lifeguards went into action. According to the published report Tuesday, January 19th, Mr. Cuba “… ran right into the water. Swimming 100 feet from shore, he grabbed one boy, then another, then two more.” The account goes on to say that Cuba somehow managed to hang on to the boys, treading water for many minutes, until another lifeguard, Herbert Goodman, came alongside in a catamaran. Cuba had to be carried ashore. A total of seven children died in the tragedy.

Although it was many years ago, we pay tribute today to the life and legacy of this selfless individual whose heroic action saved the lives of four children by risking his own.

May he rest in peace.
