QUEENS, NY – Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee today announced a partnership with the King Fights Cancer Foundation to host an ongoing toy drive benefitting children battling cancer, operated by the family of 7-year-old Queens Village resident King Singh, who himself has beaten cancer.

From now through Friday, October 30, residents can drop off new, unopened toys in “King’s Joy Box” in the lobby of Queens Borough Hall at 120-55 Queens Boulevard in Kew Gardens during weekdays between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Stuffed animals will not be accepted.

The donations will be distributed amongst children fighting cancer in the hematology and oncology units at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, as well as children undergoing treatment at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan and families supported by the Candlelighter’s NYC Childhood Cancer Foundation.

“The remarkable strength and sense of community King Singh and his family possess are inspirations to all of us in the Borough of Families,” said Borough President LEE. “Please consider following his generous example and donating a new toy today to support the many children like King courageously fighting this insidious disease.”

“Stay strong and positive. Never give up,” said KING SINGH. “You can do anything you put your mind to.”

Diagnosed with cancer at just 2 years old, King Singh has spent years not only fighting his disease, but supporting fellow children going through similar battles. His tireless activism has included numerous toy drives, as well as raising $3 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Borough President Lee presented her first proclamation to King on January 24, 2020, declaring it “King Rudolph Singh Day” in the Borough of Queens.

Queens Borough Hall can be easily reached via mass transit by taking the E or F train to the Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike station. Organizations interested in hosting a King’s Joy Box at their location to benefit the toy drive can request one by calling 718-286-3000 or emailing [email protected].

About the King Fights Cancer Foundation

The King Fights Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation dedicated to helping families whose child is diagnosed with cancer or a life threatening illness. The foundation started in honor of our son, King Singh, who is a cancer survivor. One day at the hospital after King was accessed, the nurse allowed him to pick a toy from the treasure chest. He picked bubbles. On his way out of the office, he stopped because a girl was crying hysterically and pointing to his bubbles. Without direction or hesitation, he gave her his bubbles. We asked him why and he said kids shouldn’t be sad, and he wanted her to stop crying, be happy and smile. We have limited financial resources at this time, but that does not stop us from bringing smiles to kids and their families. Since only one parent is allowed with the patient, not including siblings, due to COVID-19, toy drives have been our way to continue to make kids smile. We have delivered over 500 toys so far and hope to triple it. The toys help keep the child’s minds off of the treatment they have to endure at a point in their childhood where they should be celebrating milestones instead of fighting for their lives. We appreciate your support in bringing smiles to these inspiring warriors!
